Tom Alston relocated from southern Alberta to the city of Edmonton where he began his undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta to receive a Bachelor of Arts in 2004. After working for a short term he returned to university to pursue a Master of Architecture degree, qualifying as a pre-masters student within the department of Environmental Design at the University of Manitoba. He completed his Masters degree in 2008.

After graduation Tom began his professional design career as a project architect with Bridgman Collaborative Architecture in Winnipeg. After two years he joined the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority as a Project Coordinator in the Capital Planning Department. There he brought specific expertise to the management of Health Care capital projects. He was jointly responsible for project management and providing in-house architectural services from conception and programming, through design and development, contract documents (drawings and specifications), tender, construction and contract administration.

He has presentation experience as a capable instructor and creative writer. He enjoys working in a team environment, but is also accustomed to working independently and considers himself a natural self-starter and multi-tasker. As a careful listener Tom's leadership skills and decisive personality ensure that a thorough outcome is inherent to each design project. He values sustainable design as a means of guiding projects toward smarter and more responsible ways of building and occupying the urban realm. His broad training and experiences have made him highly adaptable and versatile with new challenges and able to develop well considered and appropriate design solutions.

Tom continues to work as Strategic Capital Planner for Alberta Health Services in Edmonton, Alberta where he has been situated since 2011.
