From March to October 2021, One One Ten Architecture + Urbanism in partnership with principal school designer, David Wittman, of Gibbs Gage Architects conducted a site analysis, land-use framework and precedent study to define the building program for a proposed 600-900 student capacity elementary school within Garry Station in west Lethbridge.
The analysis sought to discern the most appropriate configuration of program and planning priorities prior to initiating the project delivery process that would formally engage the design team for the new school.
The intent was to identify what may be possible on the site relative to building program, site constraints, environmental/climatic impacts, available playing field space, parking and drop-off areas and so on in order to provide preliminary guidance as to the likely configuration(s) and land-use framework of the school site.
A key mandate of the brief was to demonstrate a benchmark for design in the form of a compilation of relevant case study precedents of elementary and other secondary educational buildings serving students, staff and their communities. The intent of this is to better inform future stakeholders and participants in the project delivery process of the design possibilities and tangible successes located throughout western Canada and the Pacific Northwest and to enhance architectural excellence in school design throughout the division in Lethbridge and region.
This study was compiled into a report and delivered to the Lethbridge School Division in to better inform the design and planning process and future design phases as to the land-use constraints of the site and high level site related opportunities for programming and design.
