The project comprises the development of a new single family home for a family of five on approximately 1 acre of semi-rural land located in the new coulee-edge subdivision of Edgemoor at Sunrise Point in west Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.
"In a rapidly growing city, where urban density becomes a must, some yearn for space, for flora and fauna, for privacy, and soon nature becomes a luxury, almost unattainable. However, there is a new, boutique neighbourhood nearing completion where unobstructed views of nature, of the vast river valley and distant mountains, can be welcomed into custom built, timeless residences." ~ Edgemoor Website
Although the majority of our residential work is forward-thinking Modern Luxury Residences, we made an exception for friends who came to us wanting to build in a more traditional manner in the context of Edgemoor’s vision of the country estate or manor.
The project formally began in early 2017 when our client asked us to help them digest what they really wanted to accomplish in a family home. Methodically, without pressure we purposely digested the building program through our Discovery Consultation - an essential foundational step in all our projects - to understand and hear our client’s motives, aspirations and even fears. Later, at a similar on and off pace over the initial years, three design iterations had fully matured by 2020.
Then the pandemic hit.
Soon after the lock-down rising material costs nearly ground the project to a halt. An initial contractor was selected just as costs ballooned and adjustments needed to be made to prioritize key features and adapt.
In the end, a reverent transitional design persisted having inventively maintained the original program after modest scale, finish and space planning adjustments.
Now the reward of patient persistence awaits our client as curated coulee views of the Old Man River valley emerge from within their remarkable communal living spaces and a conclusion of their build is finally in sight. We are overjoyed to see our client triumph against the odds and grateful to have helped guide the project through tumult and change to realize their forever home.
At last, summer 2023 will be move in season!
