The project comprises a tenant improvement and interior alteration for a mixed plastic surgery and specialized medical aesthetics clinic located in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. The project is a relocation of existing services from within the same building. The clinic moved from the floor below to the upper level of an existing medical building which was not meeting all functional needs to fully support staff and patrons and lacked access to daylight.
The scope of work involved partnering and coordination of an entire re-envisioned brand strategy and updated design package tailored simultaneously with the development of the architecture and interiors. This resulted in a highly personalized effort between owner and collaborating team from start-to-finish. The project design and construction documentation was fast-tracked over a period of four months prior to construction and included a focused, three week effort to prioritize renovation costs while meeting appropriate standards for a medical clinic providing specialized treatments.
Teaming with post-secondary school mates and long-standing design collaborators Deb Gollub and Mel Dupuis from Design Shop (Winnipeg), the team introduced brand strategist Kait Day, founder and creative director of Nowaday Studio (Winnipeg), to the collaborative effort and client who subsequently established graphic content and a total brand package.
The renovation extends the patient experience from the moment they step into the clinic until they leave. Departing from the typical clinic experience, the design team conceived a sequence of spaces with both clients and staff in mind in order to both experientially and operationally address specific appointment paths. This process begins with an upscale concierge-like greeting point all the way through to appointment staging, the consultation or clinical treatment itself, and follow-up appointment or close-out of services.
The newly renovated space accommodates both public and private areas for intermediate staging, private and interactive dialogue, as well as social media friendly vignettes. There are numerous areas showcasing a variety of unique lighting, wall coverings and comforts such as the flow-seating and corner tabling areas. Some furniture items in the main flex-waiting area are movable so that the space can become multi-purpose for staff meetings and events with technology or food settings. The result is a design that caters to many preferences and where lingering is a welcome part of the individual's quest to feel better, be better and look better. All with direct access to experts in the field of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery, clinical aesthetics and skincare.
The interior design approach draws on subtle cues of spatial sequencing, the human body and skin surfaces, retail merchandizing and human perception by using crisp detailing, flattering natural and artificial focused lighting strategies, surprising whimsy, and layered texturing of materials to respond to patrons who are as individual as the space itself. The result caters predominantly to the feminine demographic who make up the majority of the client base.
Staff requirements were not overlooked in a space that provides adequate access to daylight and a visually delightful and accessible workspace in unburdened adjacency to all spaces by way of the race-track circulation from front to back-of-house, along with efficient room planning.
The project began mobilizing for construction in early December 2019 with final construction stages impacted to a degree during the COVID-19 pandemic.
